The wired USB setup is a huge step up, performance-wise, over remote desktop solutions like Splashtop. Both Duet and Eas圜anvas support tilt and pressure sensitivity, along with palm recognition. The bottom line here is that both apps offer comparable performance. That's still a better deal than $40 for Duet and a one-year Pro subscription. However, if you want second-screen functionality, you'll have to spend another $9.99 on the company's TwoMon second-screen software. This is fine if all you want is a drawing tablet replacement. The Eas圜anvas app itself only supports duplication. With Eas圜anvas, things are not that simple. You could have YouTube open there while you have your work apps on your home screen, for example. So if you don't want to use the drawing features at all, your iPad can make a good secondary display, albeit a small one.
However, this small-medium level of lag is perfectly fine if you just want to use the iPad as a secondary display. Use cases that don't rely on lag, like screen stretching, work very well I was able to type quite well with the touch of my fingers. This wasn't a big deal for my writing use case. However, there was still a noticeable lag, especially with faster pen strokes.
However, both were considerably faster when connected to a dedicated desktop system. This meant that it was considerably worse on the Atom netbook, to the point of being almost useless for art or design. Performance benefits from hardware acceleration. However, lag is a problem with both software solutions. If lag weren't an issue, this would allow for a very good approximation of a real drawing or writing experience. For stylus owners, pressure and tilt sensitivity are equally present in both Eas圜anvas and Duet. This was especially so considering the iPad Pro's larger 10.5-inch screen. While I don't have a capacitive stylus, I found the writing experience to be reasonable, even with the touch of my fingers. I have used stylus based devices for quite some time. Some amount of input lag is always presentĪs writing and drawing tools, both Duet and Eas圜anvas offered comparable performance. Your mileage may vary – faster PCs work better with both apps If you have a slower laptop or entry-level desktop, neither of these may be an optimal solution because there would simply be too much lag. The Intel Atom system gave very different results compared to my main Ryzen work system. The problem here is that hardware acceleration is highly dependent on your desktop configuration. This is, in fact, the only way they can pipe their main screen with low latency. Both solutions support hardware acceleration. While Eas圜anvas has more features, Duet just works right out of the box. You will need to tap the pairing icon, then tap a circle on the screen with your Wacom pen.
